Spelling will consist of sight words and phonetic words. Based on individual needs, some students may have more challenge words added to their list. Students will practice words throughout the week in class, but should still practice words at home. The more repetition, the more retention. The goal is to have students write the words they are learning correctly in their daily writing activities. I will be looking for this transfer of knowledge throughout the year. If you notice that students have the same word more than once on their list, it will be because a number of students are not spelling it correctly in their writing. Challenge words will consist of additional sight words, words used in topics/themes, or words that individual students are working on based on what they are reading or researching. Most often, words will be given on Mondays, and I will assess words throughout the year in their writing. We will not have formal Spelling tests. This helps students practice throughout the week and provides repetition from our phonics lessons. Thank you for helping your child think about sounds and making words "come to life" in writing!
